Reflexology was brought in America in the early 1900's by Chinese immigrants. Reflexology is an acupressure type technique performed on the hands and feet and is based on the ancient Oriental theory that meridian lines or pathways carry energy through the body. Because each zone or part of the body has a corresponding reflex point on the feet, stimulating that reflex point causes stimulation in the natural energy of the related organ. Crystalline deposits or tenderness indicate in a correlating reflex point can indicate a disease or dysfunction in that organ. Pressure is applied to clear out congestion and restore normal functioning and health.
Reflexology works through stimulation of the neurological-reflex points found in the hands and feet. When organs don't function normally the neural signals along these paths change patterns. Changes can be detected through the corresponding reflex points. Sometimes hard painful spots form at these reflex points. Sometimes these hard spots can be manually manipulated until they breakdown. The resulting tissue feels sandy or gritty but this feeling will subside. After they subside, the spot feels less tender and the corresponding organ to functions better.
